What makes this drive hard
Rabbit Ears Pass gets more snow than almost anywhere else on our routes and has long stretches with no services and no signal. Steamboat weather is genuinely its own system.
What we know that a map doesn't
The stretch of Highway 9 between Silverthorne and Kremmling is empty, unlit and full of wildlife after dark. It is a slower drive at night than the map suggests, and we plan for that rather than making it up en route.
Arriving
The mountain base and downtown Steamboat are three miles apart along Lincoln Avenue. Ski-in lodging at the base and a hotel downtown are different arrivals.
In summer
Steamboat in summer is ranching country with a ski town attached. The rodeo season and the Strings Music Festival are the reasons for most summer transfers.
